On AHA National Mead Day, Jason Alvey, proprietor of The Four Firkins (Minnesota's premiere gourmet beer store) held a commercial tasting featuring meads by White Winter Winery of Iron River, Wisconsin. Meadmaker Jon Hamilton attended, and generously poured samples for the 50 or so people who squoze into Jason's comfy store.
Four of the meads available for tasting were judged in a "Commercial Calibration" by four of the country's top mead experts: Ken Schramm, author of "The Compleat Meadmaker", Steve Piatz - 2008 AHA Meadmaker of the Year, Steve Fletty - 2007 AHA Meadmaker of the Year, and Curt Stock - 2005 AHA Meadmaker of the Year. They judged the four meads listed below. Click on the links to read their scoresheets and comments. It is hoped that these scoresheets will serve as examples for future BJCP Certified Mead Judges. |
