February 2014 Meeting Followup

February 26, 2014

On Saturday, February 15, the Minnesota Home Brewers Association met at Rock Bottom Brewery in Minneapolis. The primary focus of the meeting was to elect new leadership to run the club for the next year. In addition to this though, we had several fun extras!

MHBA-2014-02-1090176-2Michael Agnew was on hand to talk about his new book, Craft Beer for the Homebrewer, a collection of home brew recipes of commercial beers, directly from the professional craft brewers’ themselves!

As we were at Rock Bottom Brewery, we had to try some of their brews! They provided us with samples of four of their seasonal beers to share, discuss and talk about.

For the meat of the agenda, outgoing president, Michael Cote ran the elections and helped ensure we have some terrific leadership to help run the club for the upcoming year!

Here is the club leadership for the next year:

Crafting a Nation Screening

February 12, 2014

Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us at Casket Cinema for the screening of Crafting a Nation. Our hosts, Mark Wojahn and Wilbur Ince, both said it was the most attended movie event they’ve ever done.

The film was very interesting and shot well. We had a nice showing of MHBA members and we had some pretty good beer as well.

The players were Wilbur Ince and Mark Wojahn – co-founders of the casket cinema and Brenden Harris, Director of Photography for Crafting a Nation. We also had a short discussion of the effort it takes to start a brewery in Minnesota by Brett Michlitsch and Lonnie Manresa.

Style of the Month: Mild Ale

February 4, 2014

By Steve Piatz

This article originally appeared in the February 2006 newsletter of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association

The MHBA Style of the Month is an opportunity to brew a particular style and join fellow club members in sharing, discussing and critiquing a particular style. Consider brewing this now and bringing it to the April club meeting to share and discuss!

This month the style of the month (SOTM) recipe is for a Mild Ale. Brewing your Mild by February 15 should give you sufficient time to complete fermentation and conditioning of the beverages in time to have the beer ready for sharing at the April club meeting.

Congratulations to all Mashout Winners

January 29, 2014

Congratulations to everyone who entered beer, mead and cider in the 2014 Upper Mississippi Mashout! A big congratulations to everyone who medaled as well!

For those unfamiliar with Mashout, it is one of the largest homebrew contests in the country, drawing nearly 1000 entries from coast to coast. Mashout was started in 2002 and is sponsored by the Minnesota Homebrewers Association and the St Paul Home Brewers Club. Judges and volunteers from around the region, and around the country, descend on the Twin Cities to judge these entries as well as take part in educational seminars and catch up with friends.
