Competition: 2024 Hackamore Iron Brewer
[AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition]
Entry Drop Off Date: June 1, 2024
Award Celebration Date: June 22nd, 2024
Greetings to all!
This year marks the first hosting of the Iron Brewer Competition by Hackamore Brewery in Chanhassen, MN. This AHA/BJCP sanctioned competition is free for all MN Homebrewer Association Members. The rules are simple…brew the predetermined style of beer, highlighting the provided competition ingredient, and turn in to Hackamore Brewery on June 1st, 2024. The beer will then be judged by a BJCP certified judge and Hackamore’s Owner and Brewers. The winner of the competition gets not only bragging rights, but their beer recipe will be created in a full batch at Hackamore Brewery in partnership with the brewers and be made available to the general public!
Reach out to Matt Johnson to register for the event.
Here’s style information for the competition:
Beer Style: Red IPA
Style Guidelines: https://www.bjcp.org/…/2015/21/21B/specialty-ipa-red-ipa/
Competition Ingredient (provided by Hackamore Brewery): Vista Hops – 8 oz per competitor
Requirements: The beer you make can contain all, or some, of the provided competition ingredients. Keep in mind that judges will be seeing who can highlight the hop varietal best in their beer, which can mean using it solo, combining it with other hop varietals, or other ingredients. We truly want the competitors to be creative in how they choose to best highlight the ingredients in their submitted beer style. Other than that, competitors can feel free to use whichever yeast or grain they feel will create the best blend of flavors in their creation.
The competition ingredient is going to be provided to all competitors free of charge. You can pick up your hops from Hackamore Brewery on March 1st. If you are unable to come to the brewery to pick up your competition ingredient, please reach out to [email protected] to have them shipped to you. We strongly encourage you to come to the brewery to pick them up, as it’s a great way to meet the brewers and talk shop!
Looking forward to a great competition!

This is an IMPORTANT one, as its where our elections will happen for this years board. Positions we will be asking for nominations/voting for include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two of our At-Large Positions.

There is no planned education topic (though if you want to bring a topic to present, let me know!). Home brew is welcome to be brought and shared, but make sure to support Elm Creek as well.

Last Reminder for Holiday Party – Saturday Jan 13th

January 11, 2024

Last reminder that we are TWO days away from the MHBA Holiday Party on Saturday January 13th.

Join us at Forgotten Star Brewery with setup, socialization, and merriment starting around 5:30. Bring your best dish (to win the competition it needs to have brew in it), favorite homebrews, and yourself for a fun evening!

The party is in the private room at the NORTH end of the building. You may enter through the brewery main entrance or directly into the private room from the north entry door.
Setup will start around 5:00 pm with teardown at 9:30 pm
Socializing will be from 5:30 – 7:00 pm
Buffet-style food service will begin at 7:00 pm
Raffles with gift cards occurring throughout the night

What to bring
Food: Come with a potluck dish to share (bonus points for being prepared with a beer, cider, or mead). Make sure to bring serving utensils and an extension cord if needed.
A “People’s Choice” award will be given for the best potluck dish with beer, cider, or mead as an ingredient with voting going on throughout the night.
Plates, napkins, and silverware will be provided.
Beer/Cider/Mead/Wine to share: Bring any beer, mead, or cider that you wish to share. Bottles, growlers, and kegs are welcome. Don’t forget a small tasting glass—some plastic glasses will be available in case of emergency. The club will provide our jockeybox for use.

What? Remember to bring a tasting glass. Really. You should bring a tasting glass.
Even better if you put your name on it for the inevitable “I lost my tasting glass”.

Family and Friends: This is a family-friendly event, so bring your significant other, kids, and/or any friends/family that have ever expressed an interest in homebrewing or beer. As this is one of the most attended gatherings of the year, it’s a great opportunity to get out and meet your fellow homebrewers. If you have not made it to a meeting or would like to join the club, the Holiday potluck is a perfect chance to try some great homebrew and delicious food, and exchange homebrew with others.
